It is a landmark moment for APN. Eliot Baker and Ben Bolton are Walker Cup champions. Representing Great Britain & Ireland on the famous links of Lahinch Golf Club, the pair were part of the side that beat the United States 13½–12½ in one of the tightest finishes the event has seen.
In Sunday's singles, Eliot Baker faced Stewart Hagestad — the most experienced player on the American side and one of the most decorated amateurs of his generation. Hagestad drew level on the 17th, but Baker held his nerve on the final hole, making birdie on the 18th to win 1 up and help make the Lahinch miracle happen. It was only the second singles defeat of Hagestad's Walker Cup career.
The Walker Cup is the pinnacle of men's amateur golf — a biennial contest between Great Britain & Ireland and the United States that has launched the careers of some of the game's greatest players. Earning a place on the team is one of the highest honours available to an amateur. Lifting the trophy with it is something few players ever experience.
Walker Cup week is relentless: foursomes in the morning, singles in the afternoon, two days of match play where every hole carries weight and a single lapse can swing a point. Both players made APN's three-phase system part of their routine at Lahinch — Pre-Game from warm-up to hole 5, Mid-Game from hole 6 to 12 and End-Game from hole 13 to 18 — so that the hydration and fueling were as consistent on the first tee as they were on the last.
